| H I S T O R Y |
Dearthair was born ten minutes and fifteen seconds before his twin brother Erin, and took that age gap seriously from the moment he was old enough to understand it. When their parents died when they were only toddlers, Dearthair stayed tough and comforted his brother. When they fell under the custody of their strict grandmother, Dearthair made sure to shield his brother from the harsher side of her discipline. With a natural edge of cynicism, his brother’s naiveté was something he was instinctively dedicated to preserving. Erin was also always a fragile child, suffering frequently from illnesses and the effects of overwork, and Dearthair designated himself as also responsible for his brother’s health. Apprenticed to the tailors’ shop overseen by their semi-retired grandmother, while Erin had the patience to endure a monotonous task for hours, Dearthair enjoyed far more the aesthetics of design and the ideas rather than the practicalities of creation. Thus they generally worked in different areas, and Dearthair had to be extra careful to make sure his brother didn’t get caught up in his tasks regardless of the limits of his own stamina. Dearthair himself was always careful to keep himself in good health, convinced that if he wasn’t around to help Erin it would be a disaster. When Erin met and befriended Ciaran, Dearthair was immediately suspicious and resentful, and a pattern of backbiting began that was more malicious in intent than was healthy. He secretly felt a certain sense of satisfaction when Ciaran’s eye was blinded. And when only a little while later he discovered the ‘x’ on Ciaran’s hand and forced him into admitting his past in Dakan, his jealousy spilled over and joined with panic and anger at the threat he believed Erin to be under. Returning home to discover his brother with another of the journals and behaving not like himself at all, Dearthair did what he always did – dropped everything in favour of pursuing what he had decided was best for Erin. The two of them left town without so much as leaving a note, and all Dearthair is now interested in is to keep them travelling as far from the perceived danger of Ciaran as possible, and earning enough from various temporary jobs to support the both of them, while looking for a way to ‘fix’ his brother’s mind. |
| P E R S O N A L I T Y |
Dearthair isn’t a bad person, but he comes across as abrasive and short because he has no time for anyone who isn’t Erin. However, if someone can match his sharp tongue then he’s always willing to socialise with them and enjoy the challenge – as long as they make no attempt to get near Erin. He behaves quite differently with Erin, every inch the kind and protective brother. While he appreciates Erin’s efforts to take care of him in return, he feels more secure taking total responsibility, and thinks that Erin repays him with the level of affection he offers. Dearthair wants little beyond being able to settle down and keep his brother happy, and while he was content with being a tailor, is prepared to do any number of jobs to provide for them. Worry for his brother’s current state makes him more snappish than usual, and he lets absolutely no one see his weaknesses if he can help it. He’s very capable, but can sometimes screw things up by talking back a little too much – if he deigns to talk, that is. |

Dearthair is of the same short and skinny build as his twin, though with a sharper face and messier hair. His eyes are bright violet and usually blank with impatience, and he walks with a swagger that seems a little out of place on his frame. Still, he got into a lot of scraps when he was younger, and can more than hold his own in a fight. He also tends to cheat by biting and scratching and hair-pulling, with no qualms about turning those tricks on anyone who claims this behaviour is girly fighting. |
